Newly affiliated member in the Province of Mediterránea

26/05/2006: Spain

On the 11th January of this year, Brother Seán granted Mr Fernando Orellana Ramos a certificate of affiliation to the Institute. The reasons why the Superior General and his Council granted this are for “his witness of Christian life and that of all his family, his social commitment to the Marist missions, his devotion to the Good Mother and to Saint Marcellin Champagnat, and his exceptional affection for the Institute.” They also wanted to recognise in Doctor Orellana “ his attentive and constant care of the brothers, especially those of the communities of Malaga and Benalmádena, in his personal relationships as well as professional ones as a doctor.

Recently, on the 23rd April, Brother Manuel Jorques, Provincial of the Province of Mediterránea, gave this distinction to Mr Fernando Orellana Ramos. The ceremony took place at the residence of the elderly brothers at Benalmádena (Málaga, Spain) in the presence of the members of the two communities and of the Provincial Council.

It was during a Eucharist that they wanted to thank the newly affiliated member for all his attention to the Institute and to the brothers. Brother Teodoro Alonso addressed him saying. “Your love for the Marists comes from afar. But the visit you made to the Hermitage with your family and other former students was the spark that rekindled this desire.” Alluding to his trip to the Marist places, Mr Fernando Orellana Ramos said recently, “Since this time, my life has changed in what concerns my knowledge and my love of Saint Marcellin and all that is Marist.”

For his part, Brother Manuel Jorques highlighted the example and the inspiration that the lives of Fernando and Maria, his wife, are for the Marist Institute. After the Mass, Dr Fernando thanked everyone for his affiliation and recounted how his links with the Marists and his experience of faith had developed.

Dr Orellana is a well-known ophthalmologist in Malaga. He did his studies at Marist College, and at several times his social commitment led him to do voluntary work in Africa where he performed eye operations in very precarious conditions. He and his wife have eight children. Presently he is the President of the Association of Former Students of Malaga.
